Simon Gallup Wife: Who Is He Married To? (2026)
Simon Jonathan Gallup, born June 1, 1960, in Duxhurst, Surrey, England, has been the bassist of The Cure in two stints: from 1979 to 1982 and continuously since 1985. Gallup has been married twice. His second wife, Sarah, whom he married in December 1997, died of pancreatic cancer in 2019. His first marriage was to Carol Joy Thompson, lasting from 1987 to 1992.
Who Is Sarah?
Sarah was Simon Gallup's second wife and partner from 1997 until her death in 2019. Unlike Gallup's first wife, Sarah was not a figure in the music industry, and little personal information about her has been made public. Gallup married Sarah in December 1997, and they remained together for over two decades. Her death from pancreatic cancer in 2019 marked the end of one of the longest relationships in The Cure's history. Gallup has kept the details of his private life largely out of the public eye.
Marriage Timeline
Gallup's first marriage was to Carol Joy Thompson in 1987. Thompson, a former secretary who had contributed backing vocals to the Magazine Spies recordings in 1979, is the younger sister of Porl Thompson, The Cure's guitarist. The couple had two children together before divorcing in 1992, around the end of The Cure's Wish tour. In 1988, Gallup served as best man at Robert Smith's wedding. Gallup married his second wife, Sarah, in December 1997. They had children together and remained married until her death in 2019.
Children
Gallup has three children. With his first wife, Carol Thompson, he had two children: Eden (born March 18, 1990) and Lily (born September 7, 1992). His eldest son, Eden, who also performs under the name Ed Vendetta, is the frontman and lead guitarist of the rock band Violet Vendetta, formed in 2004. Eden has also worked with The Cure's road crew and has filled in at gigs when his father was unable to appear. With his second wife, Sarah, Gallup had at least one child, Evangeline "Evie" Gallup (born November 20, 1998). The Mission's 2001 single "Evangeline" was dedicated by Wayne Hussey to Evie Gallup, according to The Cure's Chain of Flowers newsletter.
Career Highlights
Before joining The Cure, Gallup played in the punk band Lockjaw, which evolved into The Magazine Spies. Following the Cult Hero recording sessions in October 1979, Gallup and keyboardist Matthieu Hartley left The Magazine Spies to join The Cure. Gallup played on the landmark albums Seventeen Seconds (1980), Faith (1981), and Pornography (1982). He left the band in 1982 following a fight with Robert Smith and formed Fools Dance, which released an EP in 1985. In late 1984, Gary Biddles brokered a reconciliation between Gallup and Smith, and Gallup rejoined The Cure in 1985, remaining with the band ever since.
Since his return, Gallup has played on every Cure studio album from The Head on the Door (1985) through 4:13 Dream (2008), including Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987), Disintegration (1989), and Wish (1992). In 2019, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Cure. In August 2021, Gallup briefly announced on Facebook that he had left the band after 37 years, stating he was "fed up of betrayal," but in October 2021 he clarified that he remained a member.
