Peter Hook Wife: Who Is He Married To? (2026)
Peter Hook, born Peter Woodhead on February 13, 1956, in Broughton, Manchester, England, is the co-founder and bassist of both Joy Division and New Order. One of the most recognizable bass players in post-punk, Hook has been married three times. He is currently married to Rebecca Jones, with whom he has a daughter. His second marriage, to comedian Caroline Aherne from 1994 to 1997, was widely publicized.
Who Is Rebecca Jones?
Rebecca Jones is Peter Hook's third wife. Unlike his previous wife, the well-known comedian Caroline Aherne, Jones keeps a low public profile and little biographical information about her has been published. Hook and Jones have a daughter together. The couple has maintained a relatively private family life while Hook has continued touring and recording with his band Peter Hook and the Light, which performs the Joy Division and New Order catalogs.
Marriage Timeline
Hook's first marriage was to Iris Bates, with whom he had two children, including his son Jack. In 1994, Hook married comedian and writer Caroline Aherne, best known as the co-creator and star of The Royle Family and The Mrs Merton Show. The couple married in Las Vegas in 1994, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1997 after three years. Aherne died of cancer in July 2016 at the age of 52. In his 2016 autobiography Substance: Inside New Order, Hook described the marriage as turbulent and made claims about Aherne's behavior toward him, which her brother publicly disputed. Hook subsequently married Rebecca Jones, his current wife.
Children
Hook has three children. Two are from his first marriage to Iris Bates, including his son Jack, who has been the touring bassist for The Smashing Pumpkins since 2015. Hook also has a daughter with his current wife, Rebecca Jones.
Career Highlights
On July 20, 1976, Hook and childhood friend Bernard Sumner attended a Sex Pistols concert at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall. The following day, Hook borrowed 35 pounds from his mother to buy his first bass guitar, and the two friends formed a band with Terry Mason. That band became Joy Division, with Ian Curtis joining as vocalist. Hook developed his signature high-register, melodic bass style because his first amplifier was of poor quality and only the higher notes were audible against Sumner's guitar. He played on Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
After Curtis's death in May 1980, Hook, Sumner, and drummer Stephen Morris formed New Order, with Gillian Gilbert joining on keyboards. New Order's "Blue Monday" became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. Hook sang lead on two early New Order songs, "Dreams Never End" and "Doubts Even Here," from the 1981 debut album Movement. His bass became increasingly melodic through albums including Power, Corruption & Lies (1983), Technique (1989), and Republic (1993).
Hook left New Order in 2007, leading to a long-running dispute with his former bandmates; in 2015 he sued them over the continued use of the New Order name, and the parties settled out of court. He now leads Peter Hook and the Light, performing full-album shows of the Joy Division and New Order catalogs. He published the autobiographies Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division (2013) and Substance: Inside New Order (2016), and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Central Lancashire in July 2012.
